～てもらう

Expresses receiving the benefit of an action done by someone else, often at the receiver’s request.

Structure

Receiver は/が person に/から Vて + もらう

Examples

    のり子さんに日本料理を教えてもらいました。

    のりこさんににほんりょうりをおしえてもらいました。

    Noriko-san ni nihon ryouri o oshiete moraimashita.

    I had Noriko teach me how to make Japanese food.

    マリアさんの家族の写真を見せてもらいました。

    マリアさんのかぞくのしゃしんをみせてもらいました。

    Maria-san no kazoku no shashin o misete moraimashita.

    I had pictures of Maria’s family shown to me.

～てくれる

Expresses someone doing something for the speaker or the speaker’s family.

Structure

Person は/が speaker/family に Vて + くれる

Examples

    母が私に料理を教えてくれました。

    ははがわたしにりょうりをおしえてくれました。

    Haha ga watashi ni ryouri o oshiete kuremashita.

    My mother taught me how to cook.

    友だちが野菜を送ってくれました。

    ともだちがやさいをおくってくれました。

    Tomodachi ga yasai o okutte kuremashita.

    A friend sent me some vegetables.

～てあげる / ～てやる

Expresses doing something for another person, animal, or plant.

Structure

Person は/が receiver に Vて + あげるPerson は/が animal/plant に Vて + やる

Examples

    今夜、私は夫に肉じゃがを作ってあげます。

    こんや、わたしはおっとににくじゃがをつくってあげます。

    Konya, watashi wa otto ni nikujaga o tsukutte agemasu.

    Tonight I will prepare nikujaga for my husband.

    子どもの荷物を持ってやります。

    こどものにもつをもってやります。

    Kodomo no nimotsu o motte yarimasu.

    I will carry the child’s luggage for them.

～はじめる / ～おわる

Expresses starting or finishing an action.

Structure

Vます-stem + はじめるVます-stem + おわる

Examples

    やっと作り終わりました。すぐに食べ始めました。

    やっとつくりおわりました。すぐにたべはじめました。

    Yatto tsukuriowarimashita. Sugu ni tabehajimemashita.

    We finally finished cooking and started eating right away.

  2. 2

    先週から日本語を習い始めた。

    せんしゅうからにほんごをならいはじめた。

    Senshuu kara nihongo o naraihajimeta.

    I started learning Japanese last week.
