Limits, Repetition, Typical Qualities, and Intentions

～しか…ない / ～も / ～で

Marks an insufficient limit with しか, emphasizes a large quantity with も, or expresses a price, duration, or limit with で.

Structure

N + しか + negativeQuantity N + もQuantity / price / duration N + で

Examples

    財布の中に、あと千円しかない。

    さいふのなかに、あとせんえんしかない。

    Saifu no naka ni, ato sen'en shika nai.

    I only have one thousand yen left in my wallet.

    今月は三回も映画を見に行きました。

    こんげつはさんかいもえいがをみにいきました。

    Kongetsu wa sankai mo eiga o mi ni ikimashita.

    This month I have already been to the movies three times.

    百円でできる料理を教えてもらった。

    ひゃくえんでできるりょうりをおしえてもらった。

    Hyakuen de dekiru ryouri o oshiete moratta.

    I was taught how to cook a meal on a one-hundred-yen budget.

～ばかり

Expresses that everything is of one kind or that someone does nothing but one activity, often critically.

Structure

N + ばかりN + ばかりするVて-form + ばかりいる

    休みの日には、買い物ばかりしています。

    やすみのひには、かいものばかりしています。

    Yasumi no hi ni wa, kaimono bakari shite imasu.

    On holidays, I do nothing but shop.

    勉強しないで遊んでばかりいると、いい学校に行けないよ。

    べんきょうしないであそんでばかりいると、いいがっこうにいけないよ。

    Benkyou shinaide asonde bakari iru to, ii gakkou ni ikenai yo.

    If you keep playing without studying, you will not get into a good school.

～らしい（典型的）

Attaches to a noun to show that something displays the typical qualities or character of that noun.

    最近、あたたかいですね。春らしくなってきました。

    さいきん、あたたかいですね。はるらしくなってきました。

    Saikin, atatakai desu ne. Haru rashiku natte kimashita.

    It has been quite warm recently. It is becoming spring-like.

    男らしい人や、やさしくて強い心を持った人が好きです。

    おとこらしいひとや、やさしくてつよいこころをもったひとがすきです。

    Otoko rashii hito ya, yasashikute tsuyoi kokoro o motta hito ga suki desu.

    I like someone manly, kind, and strong-hearted.

～ようと思う

Expresses the speaker's present intention or plan to do something in the future.

Structure

V volitional form + と思う / と思っている

Examples

    毎月、五千円ずつ貯金しようと思います。

    まいげつ、ごせんえんずつちょきんしようとおもいます。

    Maigetsu, gosen'en zutsu chokin shiyou to omoimasu.

    I am planning to save five thousand yen every month.

    日本語を勉強しようと思って、本を買った。

    にほんごをべんきょうしようとおもって、ほんをかった。

    Nihongo o benkyou shiyou to omotte, hon o katta.

    I bought a book because I intended to study Japanese.
