～すぎる

Expresses that a degree or quantity exceeds what the speaker considers appropriate.

Structure

Vます-stem + すぎるい-adjective without い + すぎるな-adjective + すぎる

Examples

このくつは、小さすぎて足がいたいです。
このくつは、ちいさすぎてあしがいたいです。
Kono kutsu wa, chiisasugite ashi ga itai desu.
These shoes are too small, so my feet hurt.

働きすぎて、病気になった。
はたらきすぎて、びょうきになった。
Hatarakisugite, byouki ni natta.
I worked too much and became ill.

～は…ほど～ない

Expresses that one item does not have a quality to the same degree as another.

Structure

N1 は N2 ほど + negative adjective

Examples

シドニーの家賃は、東京ほど高くないです。
シドニーのやちんは、とうきょうほどたかくないです。
Shidonii no yachin wa, Toukyou hodo takaku nai desu.
Rent in Sydney is not as expensive as in Tokyo.

N4は、N3ほどむずかしくありません。
エヌよんは、エヌさんほどむずかしくありません。
Enu yon wa, enu san hodo muzukashiku arimasen.
N4 is not as difficult as N3.

～さ

Turns an adjective into a noun that expresses the degree or quality itself.

Structure

い-adjective without い + さな-adjective without な + さ～らしい without い + さ

このへやのひろさは、どのくらいですか。
Kono heya no hirosa wa, dono kurai desu ka.
What is the size of this room?

働き始めて、お金の大切さがわかるようになった。
はたらきはじめて、おかねのたいせつさがわかるようになった。
Hataraki hajimete, okane no taisetsusa ga wakaru you ni natta.
I understood the importance of money when I started working.

～にする

Expresses choosing or deciding on one option from those available.

Structure

N + にする

Examples

駅から遠いけど、この部屋にします。
えきからとおいけど、このへやにします。
Eki kara tooi kedo, kono heya ni shimasu.
It is far from the station, but I have decided on this room.

歩いて行きますか。タクシーにしましょう。
あるいていきますか。タクシーにしましょう。
Aruite ikimasu ka. Takushii ni shimashou.
Shall we walk? Let us take a taxi instead.
