Instructions, Reported Requests, and Causatives

～なさい

A firm but softer command than the imperative form, commonly used by parents, teachers, and instructions.

Structure

Vます-stem + なさい

Examples

ゴミを分けて、袋に入れなさい。
ゴミをわけて、ふくろにいれなさい。
Gomi o wakete, fukuro ni irenasai.
Sort the garbage and put it in the bag.

やくそくをまもりなさい。
Yakusoku o mamorinasai.
Keep your promise.

～ように言う

Reports a request, instruction, piece of advice, or prayer indirectly.

Structure

V dictionary / ない-form + ように + 言う・頼む・書く・祈る

Examples

医者は、毎日、薬を飲むように言った。
いしゃは、まいにち、くすりをのむようにいった。
Isha wa, mainichi, kusuri o nomu you ni itta.
The doctor told me to take medicine every day.

お母さんに、掃除をしてくれるように頼みました。
おかあさんに、そうじをしてくれるようにたのみました。
Okaasan ni, souji o shite kureru you ni tanomimashita.
I asked my mother to do the cleaning for me.

使役形

Expresses making or allowing someone to do something, including causing an emotional reaction.

Structure

Person 1 は Person 2 を / に V-causativePermission request: V-causative + てください

Sensei wa, kodomotachi o suwaraseta.

使役受け身形

Expresses being made or forced by someone else to perform an action.

Structure

Person 2 は Person 1 に V-causative-passive

かれは、いりぐちでなまえをいわせられた。
Kare wa, iriguchi de namae o iwaserareta.
He was made to give his name at the entrance.

毎日、ピアノを練習させられている。

Mainichi, piano o renshuu saserarete iru.
I am forced to practice piano every day.
