~と…(と)、どちら~ / どちらも~ない

Asks someone to choose between two alternatives, or states that neither one applies.

Structure

N1 と N2(と)、どちらが~?N1 と N2(と)、どちらも~ない

Examples

    肉と魚と、どちらが好きですか。

    にくとさかなと、どちらがすきですか。

    Niku to sakana to, dochira ga suki desu ka.

    Which do you like better, meat or fish?

    明日とあさって、どちらも仕事で行けません。

    あしたとあさって、どちらもしごとでいけません。

    Ashita to asatte, dochira mo shigoto de ikemasen.

    I cannot go either tomorrow or the day after because of work.

~より…ほうが~

Says that one of two things has a quality to a greater degree than the other.

Structure

N1 より N2 のほうが + adjective

Examples

    やきゅうよりサッカーのほうがずっとおもしろいです。

    Yakyuu yori sakkaa no hou ga zutto omoshiroi desu.

    Soccer is much more interesting than baseball.

Expresses benefit, a deliberate purpose, or a cause that led to a result.

Person / group N + のためにV dictionary form + ためにPlain form + ため(に)

Examples

    ぼくはかぞくのためにはたらいています。

    Boku wa kazoku no tame ni hataraite imasu.

    I work for my family.

    日本の大学に行くために、日本語を勉強しています。

    にほんのだいがくにいくために、にほんごをべんきょうしています。

    Nihon no daigaku ni iku tame ni, Nihongo o benkyou shite imasu.

    I am studying Japanese in order to attend a Japanese university.

    事故のため、電車が遅れています。

    じこのため、でんしゃがおくれています。
