Polite and Humble Service Language

謙譲語の特別な形

Special humble verbs lower the speaker's own action to show respect toward the other person.

Structure

行く・来る → まいる言う → 申す見る → 拝見する食べる・飲む → いただく

Examples

    上へまいります。

    うえへまいります。

    Ue e mairimasu.

    I am going upstairs.

    ピーターと申します。よろしくお願いします。

    ピーターともうします。よろしくおねがいします。

    Piitaa to moushimasu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.

    My name is Peter. Pleased to meet you.

    パスポートを拝見します。

    パスポートをはいけんします。

    Pasupooto o haiken shimasu.

    May I see your passport?

ございます

A very polite equivalent of あります, often heard in shops, hotels, and formal announcements.

N に / は / なら + ございます

Examples

    紳士服売り場は、五階にございます。

    しんしふくうりばは、ごかいにございます。

    Shinshifuku uriba wa, gokai ni gozaimasu.

    The menswear department is on the fifth floor.

    青はございませんが、黒ならございます。

    あおはございませんが、くろならございます。

    Ao wa gozaimasen ga, kuro nara gozaimasu.

    Blue is not available, but we do have black.

～でございます

A very polite equivalent of です used in formal speech and customer service.

お～ください / ご～ください

A respectful request form commonly used for polite instructions and customer service.

Structure

お + Vます-stem + くださいご + Sino-Japanese N + ください

Examples

    こちらにおかきください。

    Kochira ni okaki kudasai.

    Please write here.

  2. 2

    どうぞ、こちらでご試着ください。

    どうぞ、こちらでごしちゃくください。

    Douzo, kochira de goshichaku kudasai.
