Reports information the speaker heard or read rather than observed directly.

Structure

Plain form + そうだ

Examples

    なつは、かわやうみではなびたいかいがあるそうです。

    Natsu wa, kawa ya umi de hanabi taikai ga aru sou desu.

    I hear that fireworks festivals are held by rivers and the sea in summer.

    彼は先週、熱があったそうだけど、今日は来るかな。

    かれはせんしゅう、ねつがあったそうだけど、きょうはくるかな。

    Kare wa senshuu, netsu ga atta sou da kedo, kyou wa kuru kana.

    I heard he had a fever last week; I wonder if he will come today.

Compares something to another thing or describes it as being just like it.

Structure

N + のようだPlain form + ようだまるで + ~ようだ

Examples

    ゆかたを着ているのり子は、まるで日本人形のようです。

    ゆかたをきているのりこは、まるでにほんにんぎょうのようです。

    Yukata o kite iru Noriko wa, marude Nihon ningyou no you desu.

    Noriko in her yukata looks just like a Japanese doll.

    シャワーを浴びたようにぬれているね。

    シャワーをあびたようにぬれているね。

    Shawaa o abita you ni nurete iru ne.

    You are wet as if you had taken a shower.

~に行く / ~に来る / ~に帰る

States the purpose for going, coming, or returning somewhere.

Vます-stem / action N + に + 行く・来る・帰る

Examples

    みんなではなびをみにいきました。

    Minna de hanabi o mi ni ikimashita.

    We all went to watch the fireworks.

    ノーイは忘れ物を取りに家へ帰りました。

    ノーイはわすれものをとりにいえへかえりました。

    Nooi wa wasuremono o tori ni ie e kaerimashita.

    Noi went home to get something she had forgotten.
