Obligations, Permission, and Prohibition

～なければならない / ～なくてはいけない

Expresses that an action is necessary, required, or a duty.

Structure

Vない-form without い + ければならないVない-form without い + くてはいけない

Examples

    明日の朝九時に仕事に行かなければなりません。

    あしたのあさくじにしごとにいかなければなりません。

    Ashita no asa kuji ni shigoto ni ikanakereba narimasen.

    I must go to work at nine tomorrow morning.

    明日までに図書館の本を返さなくてはいけない。

    あしたまでにとしょかんのほんをかえさなくてはいけない。

    Ashita made ni toshokan no hon o kaesanakute wa ikenai.

    I have to return the library book by tomorrow.

～なくてもいい / ～なくてもかまわない

Expresses that an action is unnecessary or that it is acceptable not to do it.

Structure

Vない-form without い + くてもいい / くてもかまわない

Examples

    家族の名前は書かなくてもいいです。

    かぞくのなまえはかかなくてもいいです。

    Kazoku no namae wa kakanakute mo ii desu.

    You do not have to write your family members' names.

    明日、雨なら来なくてもかまいません。

    あした、あめならこなくてもかまいません。

    Ashita, ame nara konakute mo kamaimasen.

    If it rains tomorrow, you do not have to come.

～てはいけない / ～てはだめ

Expresses a prohibition: someone must not do the action.

Structure

Vて-form + はいけない / はだめ

Examples

    時間に遅れてはいけません。

    じかんにおくれてはいけません。

    Jikan ni okurete wa ikemasen.

    You must not be late.

  2. 2

    危ないので、ここで泳いではいけません。

    あぶないので、ここでおよいではいけません。

    Abunai node, koko de oyoide wa ikemasen.

    You must not swim here because it is dangerous.

～の？

A casual form of ～んですか used to ask for an explanation, commonly with friends, family, or children.

Structure

Plain form + の？な-adjective / N + なの？

Examples

    きょうはじてんしゃでいくの？

    Kyou wa jitensha de iku no?

    Are you going by bicycle today?

    いつ国へ帰るの？

    いつくにへかえるの？
