～と

Shows a natural or automatic result, or a discovery made after an action.

Structure

Dictionary / ない-form + とPast discovery: V dictionary form + と + past result

Examples

    梅雨になると、カビが生えます。

    つゆになると、カビがはえます。

    Tsuyu ni naru to, kabi ga haemasu.

    Mold grows when the rainy season begins.

  2. 2

    スーパーに行くと、カルロスがいました。

    スーパーにいくと、カルロスがいました。

    Suupaa ni iku to, Karurosu ga imashita.

    When I went to the supermarket, Carlos was there.

～たら

Expresses a specific condition: if or when the first event happens, the second follows.

Past plain form + ら

Examples

    食べたら、おなかをこわします。

    たべたら、おなかをこわします。

    Tabetara, onaka o kowashimasu.

    If you eat it, you will get sick.

  2. 2

    外国人登録証が必要だったら、言ってください。

    がいこくじんとうろくしょうがひつようだったら、いってください。

    Gaikokujin tourokushou ga hitsuyou dattara, itte kudasai.

    Please tell me if an alien registration card is necessary.

～たほうがいい / ～ないほうがいい

Gives advice about what someone should or should not do.

Structure

Vた-form + ほうがいいVない-form + ほうがいい

Examples

    冷蔵庫に入れたほうがいいです。

    れいぞうこにいれたほうがいいです。

    Reizouko ni ireta hou ga ii desu.

    You should put it in the refrigerator.

  2. 2

    太るから、あまり食べないほうがいいよ。

    ふとるから、あまりたべないほうがいいよ。

    Futoru kara, amari tabenai hou ga ii yo.

    You should not eat too much because you will gain weight.
