Respectful and Humble Language

いただく / くださる / さしあげる

Polite equivalents of receiving, giving to the speaker, and giving to a superior.

Structure

N1 は N2 に N3 を いただくN2 が N1 に N3 を くださるN1 は N2 に N3 を さしあげる

    隣のロベルトさんに冷蔵庫をいただきました。

    となりのロベルトさんにれいぞうこをいただきました。

    Tonari no Roberuto-san ni reizouko o itadakimashita.

    I received a refrigerator from my neighbor Roberto.

    先生がメッセージを書いてくださいました。

    せんせいがメッセージをかいてくださいました。

    Sensei ga messeeji o kaite kudasaimashita.

    My teacher kindly wrote me a message.

    来週、国に帰りますので、冷蔵庫をさしあげましょうか。

    らいしゅう、くににかえりますので、れいぞうこをさしあげましょうか。

    Raishuu, kuni ni kaerimasu node, reizouko o sashiagemashou ka.

    I am returning to my country next week, so shall I give you my refrigerator?

お～になる / ご～になる

Respectfully describes an action performed by someone of higher status.

Structure

お + Vます-stem + になるご + Sino-Japanese N + になる

Examples

    社長は、いつお帰りになりますか。

    しゃちょうは、いつおかえりになりますか。

    Shachou wa, itsu okaeri ni narimasu ka.

    When will the company president return?

  2. 2

    吉田さんは、来月、会社をお辞めになります。

    よしださんは、らいげつ、かいしゃをおやめになります。

    Yoshida-san wa, raigetsu, kaisha o oyame ni narimasu.

    Mr. Yoshida will leave the company next month.

尊敬語の特別な形

Special honorific verbs used instead of common verbs such as eating, going, seeing, and saying.

Structure

食べる・飲む → 召し上がる行く・来る・いる → いらっしゃる見る → ご覧になる言う → おっしゃる

Examples

    たくさん召し上がってください。

    たくさんめしあがってください。

    Takusan meshiagatte kudasai.

    Please eat as much as you like.

    社長は何とおっしゃいましたか。

    しゃちょうはなんとおっしゃいましたか。

    Shachou wa nan to osshaimashita ka.

    What did the company president say?

お～する / ご～する

Humbly describes your own action when it directly benefits or concerns the listener.

Structure

お + Vます-stem + するご + Sino-Japanese N + する

Examples

    お荷物をお持ちします。

    おにもつをおもちします。

    Onimotsu o omochi shimasu.

    Let me carry your luggage.

  2. 2

    会場へご案内します。

    かいじょうへごあんないします。

    Kaijou e goannai shimasu.

    Let me show you to the venue.
