Describes a state that remains after a change, often with an intransitive verb.

Structure

N が intransitive Vて-form + いる

Examples

    自転車がなくなっています。

    じてんしゃがなくなっています。

    Jitensha ga nakunatte imasu.

    The bicycle has disappeared.

    電話がつながらない。電源が切れているのかな。

    でんわがつながらない。でんげんがきれているのかな。

    Denwa ga tsunagaranai. Dengen ga kirete iru no kana.

    I cannot reach him by phone. I wonder if the power is off.

~てある

Describes a state left by an intentional action, using a transitive verb.

N が transitive Vて-form + ある

Examples

    自転車のかぎはかけてありました。

    じてんしゃのかぎはかけてありました。

    Jitensha no kagi wa kakete arimashita.

    The bicycle had been locked.

    たん生日のプレゼントは、もう買ってあります。

    たんじょうびのプレゼントは、もうかってあります。

    Tanjoubi no purezento wa, mou katte arimasu.

    I have already bought the birthday present.

~のに

Contrasts an actual outcome with what was expected, often showing dissatisfaction or surprise.

Structure

Plain form + のにな-adjective / N + なのに

Examples

    Koko ni oita noni, arimasen.

    It rained even though the weather forecast said it would be sunny.
